Body Shop

body shop in campbell river goes environmentally green

Well, it’s about time that the commercial paint world catches up to the rest of us! Steve Marshall Ford’s All Makes Body Shop is leading the way by converting over to water-based paints and paint systems which are environmentally friendly.

In 2009 throughout this country, all Body Shops will be mandated by Environment Canada to make these changes from high emission paints to water-based paints. “It’s nice to see the North Island evolve and see this industry evolve. This is very new and very exciting!” says Bob Schlegel, Steve Marshall Ford Body Shop Manager and a 38 year veteran of the Body Shop industry.

The Government, through Environment Canada, is taking action to introduce an integrated, nationally consistent approach to reduce emissions of air pollutants and greenhouse gases in order to protect the health and environment of Canadians. The legislation is part of the Federal Agenda for Reduction of Emissions of VOCs from Consumer and Commercial Products. VOCs, or volatile organic compounds, are a set of chemical compounds commonly found in refinish coatings, as well as in preparation and cleaning products in body shops. They react with sunlight and contribute to smog.

Although Environment Canada says manufacturers are free to meet its proposed VOC regulations in any way they see fit, the federal department has structured its proposal in such a way that the use of waterborne basecoats, such as those mandated for Europe and California, is the most obvious solution. Environment Canada has proposed a stop sale and stop import date of January 1, 2009. Schlegel adds “by going ‘GREEN’ our body shop can contribute to the care of our environment on a local and global basis. Basically, we’re trying to find that enviro-balance and lead the way in this industry”. Marshall’s All Makes Body Shop is anticipating their ‘GREEN’ conversion in a matter of weeks, once their equipment has been converted and staff professionally trained.
